Adam O'Reilly's first-half strike was enough for Derry City to secure a 1-0 victory over Galway United at The Ryan McBride Brandywell Stadium. The result halts Galway's momentum after their recent win at Sligo and sees them remain seventh in the Premier Division, with 37 points from 31 games.
Derry's goal arrived in the 45th minute, just before the interval. A cross from Michael Duffy took a deflection off Wasiri Williams and fell perfectly for O'Reilly, who finished from close range. It was the first time in six meetings that Derry had taken the lead against Galway United.
John Caulfield had kept faith with the same starting eleven that won 3-1 at Sligo Rovers just days earlier. The visitors' main threat came from set-pieces, but they struggled to create clear openings from open play. Derry's Cameron Dummigan made a vital last-ditch tackle to deny Stephen Walsh a clear sight of goal in the first half.
Galway goalkeeper Hugo Pires Da Cunha was not overly busy, with Derry's best other chance seeing a 25-yard Michael Duffy free-kick fizz over the bar after the restart. The home side came within millimetres of a second goal on 53 minutes when Darragh Burns saw a shot blocked and his follow-up effort rolled just wide.
With twenty minutes remaining, both managers made triple substitutions in search of a decisive moment. Galway introduced Franz Pierrot, Francely Lomboto, and Dylan Connolly, while Derry brought on James Clarke, Liam Boyce, and Kevin Dos Santos. Boyce had a late chance inside the Galway area but his shot was blocked.
Derry interim manager Mark Connolly acknowledged the tight nature of the contest. "It mattered little. Derry had done enough and deserved their win," he said after the match.
The defeat means Galway United's recent form now reads two wins, one draw, and two losses from their last five outings. They now turn their attention to a home fixture against Shelbourne this Friday. Shelbourne, who sit one place above Galway in sixth, were the opponents in a 1-1 draw at Eamonn Deacy Park back in August.
