Galway United Confirm Chateau's Departure Amid Transfer Window Caution
Galway United has confirmed the departure of striker Nicolas Fleuriau Chateau, who made just three appearances for the club this season. Manager John Caulfield says he doesn't expect to be doing too much business during the present transfer window, which closes on Tuesday July 28.
Chateau's days at United looked to be running out for a long time, with the Canadian making just three appearances all season for a combined total of 34 minutes on the pitch, despite being named in the United match-day squad 18 times. Even when United were chasing a goal, the centre-forward was more often than not overlooked, and when he turned up at Pearse Stadium last Saturday in his 'civvies' for the Connacht derby, it looked like being his last time at a United game.
When asked after the match about the fact Chateau was not in the match-day squad, Caulfield said the striker was "exploring other options" with the blessing of the club. "It looks, at the moment, he is exploring other options, and we said we wouldn't stand in his way, so however, that'll pan out, we'll see," he said.
On Tuesday, however, it went from "we'll see" to 'see ya' after the club confirmed that Chateau had left the cub, but did not provide details on where he might end up. When asked after last Saturday's derby win about his plans for the transfer window, Caulfield said the focus would be on getting players back to full fitness rather than dipping into the market.
"We have two in," he said, referring to the additions of leigh Kavanagh, on loan from Bohemians until the end of the season; and the out-of-contract Dylan Connolly to the club a fortnight ago. "We're looking to bring a goalkeeper in, and we're all aware of that because Connor [Gleeson] has been really helping us out.. "Is there anyone else to come in? It is hard to know, lads, but if I get the fellas back from injury, the [Kris] Twardek, [Francely] Lomboto, and get a fit Dylan Connolly, it gives us options, and we need more options up top," he said.
Caulfield has spoken in previous seasons of his reluctance to get involved in the summer transfer window, as it often means players coming to a club that need time to get up to speed on fitness, time they would have in pre-season but not in the middle of a season. United take on Crumlin United in the First Round of the FAI Cup this Friday in Pearse Stadium (7.45pm), with the likes of Connolly and Lomboto expected to feature to build on their fitness.
